Case Studies of Digital and Media Art 56°56'51"N 24°6'23"E
2016
Contemporary media art has experienced very dynamic changes in the forms of its artistic expression, as well as in the perception of artworks by the audience and even art theoreticians. Questions about this new art form range from topics such as the unconventional nature of the elements constituting the artwork (program code, audience participation etc.), and the difficulties of displaying and preserving non-material art, to its proper place in the artistic landscape from the viewpoint of contemporary visual art. This paper aims to discuss the abovementioned questions through several case studies of various Latvian digital and contemporary media art areas.
Open Source and New Media Artists
2007
This paper deals with the open source method practiced within the new media art context. I present a case study on an international festival, PixelACHE 2005, which was organized by and for new media artists and served as a platform for demonstrations of new media projects and as a meeting place for experimental new media artists. Refugee testimonies enacted : voice and solidarity in media art installations
2018

The artworks therefore produce the potential for ethical listening, which requires interrogation into the privileges of the listener. The artworks produce a kind of sociality different from that of typical celebrity advocacy. Instead of being at the center of attention, the actors’ presence draws critical attention to…
Recent challenges to contemporary art databases. Digitisation Practices and Archive Development in Artist Estates
2021
Over the last decade, databases have appeared as the only solution for artist estates and collections seeking to categorise and disseminate their artworks and thereby enhance their position and reputation. Grounded in empirical work and scholarly research, this paper examines the archive digitisation practices at three high-ranking art organisations – Douglas Gordon’s studio, the Sigmar Polke Estate and the Julia Stoschek Collection – to show how the creation of databases has become central in conforming to best practices and providing valuable information to the art market. In revealing the mindset, requirements and conditions of such digitisation projects, this text offers a reflection on…
